How does Lenny and George change from the beginning of the book to the end of the book?

I think both George and Lennie are static characters. Their personalities essentially do not change from the beginning to the end of the book. Lennie is still making mistakes and George is trying to help him. I don't think George's eventual killing of Lenny has to do with a change in his character; George simply knows that a clean death is Lennie's only option out of his predicament.
