The dog is old, sick, and smelly; he's put down because the other men find it offensive, whereas Candy believes he should be able to die in peace. The men convince him it's kinder to shoot him (well, I don't think he's ever really convinced).

Lennie's death is the same. George believes that to do it himself, and to do it quickly is the kindest end for him.
