At the end of this chapter, Crooks says, “I don’t know if I was asleep. If some guy was with me, he could tell me I was asleep...But I just don’t know.” What does he mean by this? ( In chapter 4 )

Crooks is really lonely. Isolation and loneliness are major themes in the novella. Crooks feels especially isolated because he is segregated. He is the only person of color on the ranch and is forced to live in a small room beside the horses. Crooks is so lonely that he wonders if he exists or not.
