Foreshadowing is a hint of things to come, and can be accomplished through words or actions.

Early is the text, Carlson says the following about Candy's dog.. "The way I'd shoot him, he wouldn't feel nothing. I'd put the gun right there." He pointed with his toe. "Right back of the head. He wouldn't even quiver."

This foreshadows Lennie's death at George's hand in the novel's conclusion.
