This book is about male frienship and about loneliness. George and Lennie look out for each other. They don't seem to have much in common, but they share the dream of owning a ranch one day. Even though others don't understand their friendship (the boss thinks George is taking Lennie's pay, and Curley thinks "it's that way"), they stay together. Hence they do not suffer the loneliness that Candy faces after his dog dies, that Crooks faces because of his race, and that Curley's wife faces because of her gender.
