The "kicked in the head by a horse" yarn is spun by George to get the boss to hire them. He has just heard Candy explain Crooks's injury, so he makes up a variation on that story as a believable explanation for his friendship with Lennie. No manly man hangs around with another man, right? But if a man looks after an unfortunate accident victim, well then, that's different. With this yarn, George ends the boss's inquiry as to whether he is taking Lennie's pay.

If George hadn't killed Lennie in the end, they would have had to live their life on the run and george didnt want that. Lennie wanted to help george as much as possible but if anything he was making georges life worse.

Lennie wasnt stupid. he clearly had problems as a child and was lacking an education. and yes maybe other people didnt get an education either, but he shows signs of being slow or having a learning difficulty, not some sort of retard issue

i agree with you there dolly. i think that it is harsh to be mean to someone for the way they speak. people have many differnt problems, but doesnt mean they are retarded. i still do not think lennie is retarded, and i think that this shows how we prejudge people in society

I think Lennie is slow and very vulnerable, some people are born this way its not his fault.

You can't blame Lennie for not trying. He does try hard to make sense of things. And he isn't as forgetful as he seems. He can't remember anything eventful but he can remember things people say, particularly every single word George says. The fact that Lennie had a difficult upbringing could also be a factor. As he wasn't brought up in a balanced way he still thinks and interprets situations like a child would. In my opinion he never had the chance to grow up. The poor education of the time may also effect him, but I doubt it's a huge contribution to his mental condition. Lennie could be really intelligent, if he knew how to be.

He was probably born with a mental disability, so i doubt a lack of education affected him that much, because even if he did go to school it wouldn't have made much difference because they would not have recognised his mental disability, they would just have punished him when he got something wrong, so i think it is not due to his upbringing.

Lennie is mentally challenged, or you could use a not very pc (politically correct) term and say that he's retarded. Lennie was NOT kicked in the head by a horse when he was young. "George said, 'He's my... cousin. He got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid. He's awright. Just ain't bright.'" Then on the very next page... "'I wasn't kicked in the head with no horse, was I, George?' [that was Lennie] 'Be a damn good thing if you was,' George said viciously, "Save ever'body a hell of a lot of trouble.'" So that proves that Lennie wasn't actually kicked in the head as a kid.
