what reason do the citizen have for believing Oedipus can help them? Why do the citizen of thebes ''judge'' first of men''

The citizens believe in Oedipus because he is their hero. He saved Thebes, solved the riddle, and brought the city prosperity and safety. Thus, they look to him to save them from curse they believe they're living under.
