Oedipus is relieved to hear the messenger's news, which is that Polybus (the king of Corinth, who he believe to be his father) is dead. This means that the oracle's prophecy cannot be true (ironically, it's all already come to pass but Oedipus doesn't know that yet). The messenger then tells him not to worry, since he was adopted. This strikes Oedipus hard and pushes him towards the final phase of self-discovery that will end in tragedy.
