The novel, O Pioneers, is narrated from a variety of point of views. Considering Carl as a narrator would change the story immensely. Carl is introspective, serious, and comtemplative. He doesn't see the world for what it has to offer, but rather, he is always searching... unable to focus on one thing and perform the tasks needed to accomplish anything... flitting from here to there without a plan and unable to see the life and love that is waiting for him to take notice.
