why were Annemarie, Kirsti, and Ellen scared?

Kristi has been surrounded by soldiers her entire life, therefore, she doesn't find their presence alarming or out of the ordinary. Annemarie and Ellen are frightened because they know the changes wrought by the soldiers and fear their actions.... with good reason.
