At the end of the novel, the Uncle Henrik delivers the Rosens (including Ellen) and the other refugees to Sweden. The packet that Annemarie delivered to her uncle contained a handkerchief soaked in a chemical that eliminated the soldiers' dogs' sense of smell..... thus, the day was saved and the refugees escaped.

A very important part is that Peter Nielson is captured and executed, and you find out Peter and Lise were part of the Resistance. Lois actually tells us that Lise was ran over by a car.

♥So first They lied that Aunt Birtie died but there was no aunt Bertie nor did she die if she didn't exist. They after sent all the refugees to Sweden including Ellen and her family that's all I know
