In Chapter Three and Four specifically, the reader learns that the Danish people are facing a number of shortages because of the war. A leather shortage makes it difficult to get shoes and other leather goods. In addition to shortages, the Germans had burned down places where families would go during during their free time.... places they would go to enjoy themselves. Rationing is also the norm, sugar is rationed when there is any, as is electricity. Coffee isn't even available.
