The custom when someone died included a night of mourning. The casket was placed in the middle of the living room, flowers were picked, and candles were lit. Over the course of the evening, many people came to show their respects. Note, however, that unlike the mourning Annemarie was familiar with.... no one brought food for the family, which was also a custom.
