How does Uncle Henrik's house look like from the inside?

Uncle Henrik lives in a red-roofed farm house. It is very old and crooked; the shuttered windows are tilted at angles. Located close to the sea, his land is surrounded by the woods, has an apple tree (bird's nest included), and a meadow. I see no evidence of a broken staircase mentioned in Chapter Seven's description of his home.
