The author's purpose was to make the reader intimately aware of the "father's" feelings and emotions. People often don't take the father's feelings into consideration in cases of divorce, the father often becomes or feels alienated from his children. This short story gives the reader a glimpse into the mindset of a father who's no longer sure of himself, no longer certain of how he's supposed to act or what actions will find him judged and lacking. Broken homes often leave the father on the outside looking in, sometimes frightened, sometimes resentful, sometimes lacking, and often unfulfilled.
