Why do the other Jews hit Elie's father when he is sick?

When Elie's father becomes ill with dysentery. He complains to Elie that the other men are hitting him.

The men hit Elie's father in order to get his food and because he is soiling his bed. Dysentery loosens the bowels, and the men told Elie that the accidents, and likely the smell, was upsetting them.
