I think the flames in the night sky is something I will never forget. When Ellie and his father get off the train at Auschwitz, it is one of the first things that they see. THey smell the stench of burning flesh and see the flames in the distance, "Look at the fire! Look at the flames! Flames everywhere…" This inhumanity is difficult to comprehend. The place literally looks like Hell. The irony, of course, is that Ellie and the other Jews have done nothing wrong.
