Skilled workers were useful to the Nazis. If their trade directly related to the German war effort (making munitions, brick layer, construction...) they would be put to use in a similar capacity. In any case, most were allowed to work for the time being. Manual labourers were also liked. What the Nazis did not have use for were intellectuals like teachers, students....People practiced in individual thought were considered a danger to the Nazis. Elie wisely took the advise given to him and stated that he was a farmer. This probably saved his life.
