The phrase "work is liberty" represents one of the greatest examples of Nazi propaganda. This phrase gave the prisoners a sense of hope.... it made them believe that possibly they might not just disappear afterall. Seeing this phrase outside the gates of Aushwitz would have led the prisoners to believe that hard work would keep them alive and earn them freedom. For the prisoners, there was a psychological impact as well. Most of the prisoners had heard rumors of what lay ahead of them..... the plaque might have alleviated some of those fears.
