What does the narrator mean by "Poor Father! Of what then did you die?" in reaction to his father's response to the Germans making the Jews wear yellow stars of David?

The star is a symbol of death. This was an ironic statement being that Elie's father didn't originally feel the symbol of their faith to be a bad thing to put on their clothing, never dreaming that the majority of those forced to wear the star were put to death.
