In Chapter Five, the reader experiences Elie's complete rejection of God, as he turns his back on the rituals of the Jewish faith and loses all hope in humanity. This chapter illuminates the horrors of Elie's world..... the desperation and the hopelessness. None-the-less, it is this hopelessness he wants us to understand.
