At this point the doctor is cursing Elizer's father and the other men who are at near death the doctor accuses them of being lazy and wanting to lay in bed. He Elizer loses all sense of reason, "oh to strangle the doctor and the others! To burn the whole world." Elizer has lost hope in everything, only anger and vengeance remains. It is a vengeance not just against the Nazis but at the whole world. To Elizer the whole world had become a living Hell not worthy of redemption. Human nature was evil and mankind deserved to be destroyed. The old empathetic Elizer seemed to be no more.
