This is true. There were times when they could have run. This was especially true during Moshe the Beadle's ominous warnings. They were also offered sanctuary by one of their German servant who had family in the countryside. The family wanted to stay with their extended family and close friends. Also, for some time, they felt the situation would not get as bad as it did.
