Traditionally, Rosh Hashanah is a time for celebration, marking the beginning of the Jewish New Year. Why, then, is Wiesel afraid of having to wish his father a happy new year?

This is because there is nothing happy about what is happening. Elie, and other Jews, are beginning to think that their God has forsaken them. There is nothing to look foreward to?
