The Jews in the camp try to observe their religion by praying before meals, singing Hasidic melodies in the evening, and occasionally fasting. They also celebrate the New Year.

Wiesel's faith has been shaken. Once a devout Jew, who loved God and studied endlessly, Elie questions his faith. He questions whether or not man is not stronger than God.
