Explain how this passage employs metaphors to describe Elie’s physical condition : « The bread, the soup—those were my entire life. I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even less : a famished stomach. The stomach alone was measuring time. « What meaning is achieved through the metaphors ?

Through this passage, we learn that at this point Elie's life consisted of little more than hunger. His inner clock only focused on the time between meals, and his mind only focused on food. There was nothing for him but hunger.
