Why didn’t the prisoners attempt to get soup from the unprotected cauldrons, and why did they hate the man who did try?

The prisoners long for the soup but are terrified to leave the barracks. Hundreds of men watch as a single man crawls to the soup, thrusts his head into the liquid, and then dies. The man ruined their appetites, not to mention the soup.
