Is it human nature that makes people inclined to put themselves before the welfare of others, or is it society that morally corrupts people? (Night Book)

In relation to this novel and subject, it's my opinion that human nature dictates our priorities regarding the welfare of others. Without a doubt, society influences our actions and the way we think, but unfortunately, people are more often than not ignorant of the things we should be aware of in regard to the welfare of others. Circumstances can be corruptive and misleading.... but ignorance is not necessarily corruptive.
