Mauriac looks at the whole picture in this one paragraph. As a Xhristian, he sees Elie's loss of faith as an affirmation of Christian beliefs. Suffering, pain, and persecution have historically affected both Jews and Christians. Christians are completely aware of suffering in the world, but Christians also believe in the grace of God. He states that if "the Almighty is the Almighty (the God of the Jews and Christians); the last word for each of us belongs to Him."
