I assume you are referring to Elie's refusal to observe Rosh Hashanah, as well as his refusal to observe the fast prior to Yom Kippur. Elie's defiance of Jewish law and tradition makes him feel good. Unfortunately, it also leaves him feeling as if he has a void in his soul.
