How did the head of Eliezers block treat the men? Why did he treat them this way?

The head of the block was kind and free with advice meant to help the prisoners stay alive. We can infer that he treats them kindly because, he too, is a Pole. We learn later that he is removed from his position for being to lenient with the prisoners.
