In the novel's early chapters, Elie is concerned with staying with his father... the two helped each other through.

In Chapter Four, when Elie's father is beaten, he becomes angry with his father instead of showing him compassion.

At the conclusion of the novel, Elie is relieved when his father dies, something he can never forgive himself for.
