Eliezer is conflicted about the raid, because the prisoners are given the opportunity to "steal" from two huge food vats of soup that are left unattended. Of course, the prisoners were not supposed to be "out and about" and the theft does not work. The man is shot and dies on the ground, and he is ultimately hanged (dead) to send all the prisoners a message about how they act. However, Eliezer realizes that he has become somewhat hardened to such horrors and that he fells little emotionally.
