Setting and Context

The main action takes place in the city Forks, Washington. Forks has very high rainfall that is why the Cullens live here. At the end of the story, the action takes place in Volterra, Italy, where Edward provokes the Volturi to kill him.

Narrator and Point of View

The narrator of the novel is a first person Bella Swan, who tells her love story with Edward Cullen and problems, which prevent the main characters from being together.

Tone and Mood

The mood is depressive, as Edward abandons Bella and she falls into depression. Edward and Bella as Romeo and Juliet, they cannot be together, because they are from different worlds - he is a vampire, she is a human. This is very dramatic, and sometimes it is tragic.

Protagonist and Antagonist

The main protagonist is Isabella Swan. The main antagonist is Victoria, who desires to kill Bella, because Edward kills Victoria’s lover James. She wants to avenge.

Major Conflict

The major conflict happens between Bella and Edward. Edward assures Bella that if they are together, eventually Bella will die. Therefore, he breaks up with Bella and moves into the other city. Bella is mad at him, but she cannot forget her love.

Climax

The climax happens when Bella goes to Italy and protects Edward from the death penalty, preventing him from going out into the sun and thus revealing himself that he is a vampire.

Foreshadowing

The reader can notice the foreshadowing at the beginning of the book, when Bella has a nightmare. Bella thinks that she sees her late grandmother in her dream, but in fact, she sees her reflection in the mirror in old age and next to her is the same young Edward. It foreshadows the fact that if Edward does not turn Bella into a vampire, she will become an old woman.

The main paradox is an existence of vampires, werewolves and superpowers such as ability to see the future and read minds.

Parallelism

In this book, there is a parallel of good vampires and evil vampires. Good vampires feed on the blood of animals. Bad vampires drink the human blood. There is an eternal struggle for justice and power between these two sides.

Personification

The author uses some personifications such as “a dizzying array of emotions shot through me in a second” and “the pain had caught up with me” to show that the human emotions and pain are not only feelings. They are things that drastically affect Bella and the assessment of her life. These feelings can hurt her or even kill. They control her body and subconscious mind.
