I think both are mavericks of sorts. They are women who refuse to live by the stereotypes given to them. They both seek education which is really the most important way to escape their poverty and status as women. Although Lucia uses her wiles to get herself away from the homestead, she eventually enrolls herself in Grade One classes so that she might have some education. Tambu fourishes when she is allowed to attend missionary school.

Tambu and Lucia are ascaping from the society that is too stereotypical when it come to education for females. Tambu goes to missionary school to get education that will escape them from poverty. And Lucia is a very independent woman who is known as having affairs with wealthy men, she escapes by voicing out herself as she is challenging Babamukuru and going to the Dare which was for men only.
