Why did Lucia, who seemed so self-centered throughout the book, spend time and patience caring for her sister when she was ill?

I think the answer to this question would be found in Chapter 9, after Babamukuru told Tambu's parents of his decision to allow Tambu to attend Sacred Heart, and Mainini took ill. I can't find an answer whatsoever to this question.
