Necessary Lies is by Diane Chamberlin, and was published in 2013. It takes place in a town down south, about fifty years ago. This text follows the story of Ivy Hart, a fifteen-year-old girl where her parents die, and she has to take care of her grandma, sister, and nephew on a tobacco farm. Ivy herself suffers from epilepsy, and her grandma is aging as her sister struggles with a mental illness.
With the help of Jane Forrester, a social worker, the Harts get help with the woman who is willing to work and get to know the families she works with. Jane must decide how to help the Harts, and she and Ivy must work together to fight past a time with much racial discrimination.
