Why is Bigger gruff when Bessie comes up to him in the restaurant? How does she react?

Bigger is already uncomfortable being with Mary and John at an establishment he frequents (as well as his friends). He speaks to Bessie gruffly because he wants her to go away; she doesn't take it well, but she does go away and leave them alone.
