Why does Doc, G.H, and Jack keep laughing while bigger abuses gus?

I think much of their laughter is an uneasy sort of laugh. They don't want to rob a white man either but playing a part for Bigger seems more important to them during the moment. There are the deep rooted racial emotions that they harbor. It is connected to their pride and their manhood.
