Bigger's flight was an act of fear. He ran because he was afraid of the authorities and what would happen to him, and he felt guilty over Bessie's murder. Note, he did not feel guilty about Mary's murder because it was an accident. Self-deception occurs way back at the point when Bigger accidently kills Mary, gets away with it (for the time being), and steals money. He believes these acts have made him powerful.
