Mary is responsible for behaving badly, getting drunk, and being unable to make it into her home alone. Bigger, on the other hand, makes the decision to carry her into her room, rather than alerting another member of the household. Bigger holds the pillow over her face, and Bigger also makes the decision to burn her body in the furnace.
