How does the incident of the rat foreshadow Bigger's fate?

Bigger instinctually kills the rat with a skillet. There isn't any forethought, remorse, or hesitation. This is the same way he will later take Mary's life.... without thought. Foreshadowing can also be found in his mother's warning that is he doesn't change his ways he will end up on the gallows....
