How does Bigger feel about Max defending him in court when Jan first introduces them? How do his feelings change as the trial goes on?

How does Bigger feel about Max defending him in court when Jan first introduces them, and how do his feelings change as the trial goes on?

This question is directed mainly toward the Book III. I would like to make sure I'm not looking over any details. Thank you!

At first Bigger is quite happy to have Max deffend him free of charge. As the trial wears on, Bigger sees that he is living in a No Man's Land and even as he answers the sum of Max's questions, he feels Max's condescension and feels distance.
