How does Bigger show he does not feel remorse for murdering Mary; he is concerned only about getting caught?

Rather than admit to accidently killing Mary, Bigger's first thought is not getting caught. Without a second thought, he mutilates her body in order to fit it into the furnace. No respect.... no regard.... merely self-preservation. He even steals Mary's money from her purse before leaving.
