I read it a long time ago but I recall thinking it was kind of a vernon of black Steinbeck. The setting is in the depression era 1930's America and the mood is consistently bleak. Bigger is an emasculated black man in his 20's living with his mother. I thought the beginning was slow but the narrative picks up as we get to know Bigger better. This isn't a cheer you up sort of book but somehow the tragic character of Bigger sticks in your mind long after you tuck your book away.
