Why do you think Frederick Douglass had to learn to read in secret?

Douglass had to read in secret because slave owners did not promote literacy. Owners believed that educating their slaves would make them harder to handle.... harder to control. Thus, they kept them illiterate in order to keep them ignorant and compliant.
