What effect do the Christmas holidays have on slaves? Why does Douglass say that the slave owners want their slaves to drink heavily during the holidays?

The more heavily they drink, the more animalistic they may become.  The owners could easily use this as justification for why they need to be controlled.  The slaves would have a great deal of trouble seeing any good in Christmas considering the way they are treated throughout the year.
