Douglass believed that one could not be free without the opportunity to learn a trade and take care of their families. Former slaves and uneducated blacks.... or anyone for that matter needed to be trained for the workforce.... they needed to be able to perform a specialized task that would afford them a living. Douglass understood that reading and writing were integral to freedom.... that training is integral to finding a place within the work force.
