Slaveholders established a law that required the designation of the children of slave women to follow the condition of their mothers so as to legally protect themselves from becoming their fathers. This meant they could father as many children as they pleased and be bought and sold at will.

Douglass saw his aunt whipped when he was only a child. She was beaten until she was bloody.

Let me clarify..... the children could be bought and sold at will.

Also, the fathering of slaves by owners put the children born to slave mothers in a precarious position. They were often mistreated by the owners wife and children.
