When he first heard the term "abolition" he looked it up in the dictionary but still could not figure out what exactly was being abolished. He began to hear talk of abolition concerning slaves in the District of Columbia.

While in this state of mind, I was eager to hear any one speak of slavery. I was a ready listener. Every little while, I could hear something about the abolitionists. It was some time before I found what the word meant. ch 7
